‘A day in the life’ is a storytelling activity suitable for key stage 1 or 2. Children will be encouraged to think in depth about the daily habits and practices of a particular bug or small animal. The advantage of the activity is that the story can be built in stages and there is considerable fluidity in respect to how different languages can be interwoven. This activity affords children the opportunity to identify words or phrases, as opposed to complete sentences and paragraphs, which ensure that it is accessible to a child who expresses an interest in a language or one they might speak, but not be used to producing written work in their chosen language. A child can also complete every stage in one or more languages that aren’t English, for example, they might find that certain words work better in different languages.
